MOTHERS’ MILK BANK CELEBRATES GRAND OPENING WITH SPECIAL EVENT

Austin Milk Bank to Help More Preemies Thrive in 2010
WHO: The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin
WHAT: Grand Opening Celebration at our new home!
Hors d’oeuvres and wine will be served.
Free parking.
WHEN: Thursday, March 25, 2010 from 5 to 7 p.m.
WHERE: 2911 Medical Arts St., Suite 12 (in Medical Arts Square), Austin, TX 78705

The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin welcomes supporters and friends to tour its new home in central Austin, near St. David’s Hospital and just north of the University of Texas campus. The new facility features three state-of-the-art pasteurizing labs, a drive-thru Milk Drop for milk donors, a meeting room where groups can gather, and expanded office space for staff.
This year, the Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin will:
• Recruit and screen 400 milk donors
• Train and manage 70 volunteers
• Process 9% more milk (on top of last year’s 22% increase)
• Provide charitable care to uninsured babies
• Help more than 1,600 fragile babies thrive.
The expanded and renovated facility helps to make this growth possible, and has been generously supported by a significant grant from the St. David’s Foundation. Additional funding has come from the Austin Community Foundation, JMR Barker Foundation, Lola Wright Foundation, The Meadows Foundation, and Ronald McDonald House Charities.
The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin is a non-profit organization whose mission is to accept, pasteurize, and dispense donor human milk by physician prescription, primarily to premature and ill infants. These babies are more likely to acquire life-threatening infections if fed formula instead of human milk. The most common infection, necrotizing entercolitis, can damage the intestines so severely that many babies who acquire it will die. The remainder face life-long complications. Preemies fed human milk – either their mother’s own or pasteurized donor milk – are largely protected from this devastating condition.
Though it is standard practice for hospital neonatologists to strongly encourage mothers of preemies to breastfeed or express their milk for tube-feeding their very small babies, fewer than half of mothers of premature infants are able to do so. The Milk Bank provides safe donor human milk to preterm and ill infants in the hospital and to sick babies at home.
The Mothers’ Milk Bank at Austin was founded in 1999 by a group of doctors and parents, led by Dr. Sonny Rivera, Chief of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at St. David’s Medical Center, and the late Dr. George Sharpe.

Must Have Items for your Baby Registry

With so many things going through your mind during your pregnancy, finding out what you need for your little one's arrival as you create a baby registry can be quite an overwhelming task. I personally love checklists! All the suggestions on what your baby will need are laid out for you, simplifying your time and efforts! Baby Coco, a local baby boutique in Austin carries a wonderful selection of items for your baby's nursery and the newest and most stylish trends for new mamas! Their Nursery Checklist is a must have for your Baby Registry! If you are in the Austin area, Baby Coco offers a great baby registry service, which includes gift wrapping and even will email a copy of your baby registry to your any family or friends that are interested.

Here are some MUST HAVE items offered at Baby Coco:

Diaper Bags: At Baby Coco, they don’t believe in carrying some big, plain tote for a diaper bag. This is your new purse! There’s no reason to stop carrying chic bags when you become a mama.

Get your husband his own bag too. Husbands forget to re-stock your bag when they are done carrying it. Not good when you are out and about and out of wipes. Also, it gives a man some dignity. :)

Slings: Highly recommended to all mamas registering. They are a life-saver! Baby Coco carries Serena and Lily Market Slings, The Peanut Shell pouch slings and Zolowear rings slings.

Cheyenne Beard, the store's manager, or one of her friendly staff members will be happy to help mamas find the right sling for their lifestyle. They will make sure you get the right fit and will even help you how to use them!

Feed Me Journal: This is one of Baby Coco's personal favorites to give. At the hospital or in your lactation class, they usually only give you one photocopied sheet to help keep track of feedings. Unfortunately, I didn't know this hidden gem existed and ended up making countless copies and before I knew it, I had sheets of nursing, sleeping and pooping schedules laying all over our breakfast table!!

This little book is small and fits easily into your purse or diaper bag. It also works for breast-feeding or bottle-feeding mamas and includes space for adding solid foods.

To view Baby Coco's complete selection, you can check them out online or visit their beautiful boutique located on

Fit Mommy2B Tip #8: Get a Prenatal Massage!

Getting a pregnancy massage is a real opportunity to help practice your capacity to let go as you prepare your body for your birth experience! Massages can be adjusted to accomodate your changing body. It is shown that just receiving 20-minute massages, twice weekly in the last trimester, may significantly improve the mom’s neonatal outcome, especially prematurity, labor pain and labor time.

Prenatal Massage presents a number of benefits for the future mommas:
  • Reduces stress
  • Relieves back discomfort due to changes in body and posture
  • Lower prematurity rates
  • Reduce labor pain and labor time
  • Lower the risk for depression
  • Reduce pelvic discomfort
  • Lower the need for medication
  • Reduce the swelling of ankles and feet
  • Improves sleep

If you'd like to know more about the great benefits of prenatal massage, you can view the entire article submitted by Star Doula Summer Greenlees on our Mommy2B website.

Thanksgiving While Pregnant

Thanksgiving is a wonderful time to get together with loved ones, have a lovely meal, and be thankful for that little one growing inside you!! It can also get a little stressful if you're hosting the dinner or driving/flying to see relatives. Here are a few tips to make your Thanksgiving enjoyable while pregnant!

  • Take every opportunity you can to put your feet up and relax! Let others do the work and you get some rest! After all, you have a good excuse :)
  • If the smell of Thanksgiving food makes you queazy, opt to eat out instead, or go out for a walk while the food is being prepared.
  • Don't feel guilty if you over indulge a bit, just don't overdo it! Enjoy this stage of your life and the savory holiday treats!
  • Be prepared to hear lots of "advice" from friends and relatives! It can get a little annoying, but be open minded about it and take them with a smile :)
  • Don't feel insulted by comments about your body image. You may hear things like: "you're so big," or "you're about to pop soon!" Every woman carries their baby and weight differently. I know it may be hard, but try to ignore it.
  • If you are traveling, make sure you get the ok from your dr.
  • Keep a positive attitude!! Your little one will thank you!!

Have a happy Thanksgiving ladies!!

Fit Mommy2B Tip #3: Kegels

Kegels are a great exercise to help strengthen our pelvic floor muscles. Doing it consistently may help prevent tears during labor, and even may make pushing a bit easier. The best part is that you can do it anywhere and at anytime!
Kegels are not restricted to just pregnant women. You can do it at anytime and it's also known to help in other areas, such as incontinence and sex.

Weight Gain during pregnancy

We’re so excited to have this little human being growing inside us, but at the same time we dread every time we hit that scale…rgghhh…We always wonder “where does it all go???” The “normal” pregnancy weight gain for a healthy woman is around 25-35 lbs. Here’s the breakdown of where the pounds go:

Baby: 7-9 lbs
Placenta: 2 lbs
Amniotic fluid: 2 lbs
Blood volume: 4-5 lbs
Increase in fluid : 3-4 lbs
Uterine enlargement: 2 lbs
Breastfeeding preparation: 1 lb
Total: 21-25 lbs

Ok…where’s the other 4-10 extra lbs?? Unfortunately, for us, (not the baby!) this extra weight is additional fat deposits needed for your body to accommodate for the great amount of energy is spending and breastfeeding. I’m latina, so these pounds all went to one place….hips!

During the 1st trimester, you can probably gain 4-8 lbs (or actually lose weight if you dealt with morning sickness) During the 2nd trimester, you may gain 1-2 lbs/week and it may stay that way until the last few weeks of your pregnancy, when your baby gains most of the weight. To help you find out if you are within the range of weight gain, you can check out this chart. I gained 36 lbs with my son and this chart was pretty helpful in keeping me on track

You would be one of the lucky few if you actually lose most of it after leaving the hospital. The usual is about 15 lbs. The rest….is up to us to lose. Breastfeeding does speed up the process, as our metabolism increases. Just make sure to eat healthy and add 100-200cal to your diet to nourish your baby’s milk.

Your doctor will always let you know if you're on the right track too. As long as it doesn't pose any risk to the baby, enjoy those extra pounds!!

Fit Mommy2B Tip #2: Strengthening your lower back

As your belly continues to grow, usually so does lower back pain :( There will be a lot of pressure put in that area and the best we can do to avoid or minimize the pain is to help strengthen those muscles. These are a few exercises that may help you. Try about 2 sets of 10-15 reps.

Cat Pose - You may be familiar with this term if you've ever attended a yoga class. This exercise gives you a nice lower back stretch. Make sure to accomodate for your belly and stretch only as far as it's comfortable for you and baby.

Pelvic Tilt on a Balance Ball - This one will help you keep balance (working the core muscles) as you strengthen the pelvic muscles and lower back.

Kneeling Leg & Arm Raise - Also great for your core and back muscles.

Make sure to get a nice stretch before and after any workout to avoid injuries, but don't stretch too hard as our ligaments become looser during pregnancy. Always consult with your doctor when in doubt.

Sharing the news with the family

When we found out we got pregnant, we wanted to find a special way to let our closest family members know about the wonderful news, especially since my husband and I don't have any family in Texas. Mine is in Venezuela and his are in Georgia and Alabama. We didn't just want to call them, we wanted to do something unique and have them call us!! At first, we wanted to shout the news to the world, but there's always the anxiety about making sure the little one truly is a reality (like the 7 pregnancy tests I took weren't enough!) We happened to have conceived our little boy in Venezuela when we went to visit my family for Christmas in 2007.

My husband had the awesome idea of telling the family the news with a card with a very creative and ambiguous message. You can view the card here. We really couldn't contain the news much longer and sent out the cards when I was 9 wks pregnant. My husband and I were working at the time my mom-inlaw left us a message on all our phones asking us "is it what I think it is?" Everyone were calling each other asking themselves the same question. We finally got to tell them that night and they were so excited, especially since it was the first grandson on my husband's side. It was really a fun way to share the news! It's going to be hard to top this one when we have our 2nd one!

Do you have an interesting story about how you broke the news to your family or friends? Feel free to share your stories by posting a comment in this post.

Fit Mommy2B Tip #1: The best pregnancy exercise..Walking

I found this really neat article on BabyFit that talks about walking.
Regardless of your fitness level, walking is the best low-impact cardio exercise that's perfectly safe throughout your pregnancy. If you're a beginner, start walking 20-30 min a day 3 times a week. You can increase your walks by 5 min until you get to 60min 4-5 times a day.

Here are some useful tips for every trimester of your pregnancy:

  • Wear comfortable shoes.
  • Always wear UV sunblock when you're out, even if the sun is not out!
  • Keep water with you at all times. It is VERY important to keep yourself hydrated to help avoid premature contractions.
  • Keep your chin up and pay attention to your posture to avoid hurting your back and compensate for the growing belly.
  • Swing your arms to help with balance.
  • Walk with a friend to keep you company and motivated!
  • Keep at a pace that feels comfortable for you. Don't push yourself, just listen to your body.
  • Try walking on even pavement to make it a bit easier for your body, especially during the 3rd trimester.
  • The recommended heart rate is about 140bpm. If you can carry out a conversation without getting short of breath while exercising, then you're OK.
  • Always carry your cell phone. You never know when you'll need to call for help.
  • Don't forget to do a little strech before and after your walk.

Keep checking more of my fit mommy2B tips to help you feel like a sexy mama!!

Have a happy walking!
